IC Information
CHARACTER NAME: Roxas
AGE: 15 physically, 1 chronologically
CANON: Kingdom Hearts
CANON POINT: Day 358, from the fight with Riku
FAMILY TYPES: Virus Busters, Unknown, Dark Area. They're somewhat contradictory but Roxas's whole character is about being the odd cross-section of light, darkness, and in-between; it's the realm where he was born, it's how they desgined his clothing, etc. Roxas is an inherently dark creature (a Nobody), but his elemental affinity is to light, and he's inherently a good person, caught up in the manipulations of bad people. So... Yeah, these three families are right in his wheelhouse.

APPEARANCE: Roxas looks, outwardly, like an ordinary human. He's physically 15 years old and on the shorter side for that age, probably around 5'4". Short isn't the same as unimpressive, though, and his build is compact and solidly muscled. He has short, spiky blond hair and some of the biggest, bluest eyes ever. He'll be wearing his Organization uniform: heavy black leather ankle-length coat with a hood, gloves, boots, and slacks. Character art, game sprite, and dualwielding.

PERSONALITY: 358 days ago, Roxas began his life as a fully-formed 15-year-old with no memories of any existence before that moment. As a Nobody, this is about 50% as expected: Nobodies are the remains of a human whose heart was taken. In most such cases the body simply dies, but a human whose willpower was exceptionally strong will continue living, even without their heart. Therefore all Nobodies begin abruptly, fully-formed and new to the world.

Roxas was different in that he had no memories of the person he used to be. Ordinarily, a Nobody would retain the memories of their human life yet feel a dissociation from it, but the dissociation is all that Roxas has. With no memories of Sora's life, or any life at all, Roxas begins his existence as a blank slate. For weeks he is like a zombie: rarely speaking unless spoken to, wearing a blank expression, ignorant of social norms and expectations.

But Roxas is a quick learner and, as a result of this experience, develops a personality wholly unique from Sora's. He's had to be an excellent mimic, picking up on vocal cues and physical signals, and he tends to match the tone of those around him. If you're smiling and friendly, Roxas will be smiling and friendly right back -- and if you're hostile and cool, Roxas will respond in kind. He's been trained by the Organization to be observant and analytical of his surroundings, but he doesn't always understand the results, due to the lack of context that his memories of a human life would have given him -- especially when those results hinge on emotion. Still, he's intelligent and thoughtful, frequently taking the new things he learns and the comments that people make and applying them to his own life, asking questions about his relationships, his experiences, and his nature.

Roxas tends toward emotional neutrality: he is usually calm, receptive, and reserved unless circumstances affect him otherwise. He's quick to warm up in the presence of his friends, to the point where he might be indistinguishable from any human: smiling, laughing, teasing. His friends are the most important thing in his world and he cares deeply about them -- he wanted those sunsets on the clocktower with Axel and Xion to last forever. In his comfort zone Roxas can be confident and cocky, bratty, and even sarcastic, but those good times with his friends are few and far between. Roxas's thoughtful nature often drags him down into melancholy when his friends are hurt or when he runs up against the essential dilemmas and hypocrises of a Nobody's existence -- why can't I cheer Xion up? why do I feel this awful tension in my chest when I know I can't feel sadness? can we care about things, without our hearts?

On some level, Roxas doesn't believe the Organization line about how they need hearts or they can't be happy -- can't feel anything at all. He feels happy enough when he's with his friends, and he knows he feels emotions like fear and sadness, no matter how many times Axel tries to convince him it's just the physical memory of what those feelings were like. He's very honest about his opinions and reactions, stating them openly even when they contradict with others around them; he's not intimidated by disagreement or even conflict. But he does trust the Organization enough to believe that Kingdom Hearts is necessary, and that he'll understand once he has a heart... or he used to trust them that much.

Roxas is dangerous when his trust has been abused, when his friends have been threatened, or -- as in the case with the Organization -- both. The Organization manipulated and lied to him, put him in a situation where he had to kill Xion or be killed by her, and he reacts with unbridled fury and a complete willingness to resort to violence against those who wronged him and those who get in his way. Without his memories he's been dependent on others to find the truth, and the knowledge that he was deceived is infuriating for him to the point where he turns against Axel, his best friend, for becoming a part of those lies. He leaves the Organization permanently, intending to find the truth about himself and put things right, even if that means destroying the Nobodies' only chance at becoming whole again.

SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON:
4.) What ability would you most like to have?
Well -- I'd like to be able to fly all the time, I guess. I got a chance to fly in Never Land, and... it was wonderful. [warming up to his topic] Uplifting, and fun, and exciting... Gliding's all right, but it just isn't the same.

5.) You have one choice. That choice will result in either the end of the world or it will save it. Which way would you go?
What kind of question is that? I'd save it, probably. Who just destroys a world because they can? I mean -- maybe if there was a good reason, but... if someone just took me to a world and said I should decide if it got saved or destroyed, I'd leave it alone.

6.) What would make up your ideal friend?
That one's easy. [a little bit bitter, maybe] Someone honest. Someone I can have fun with, and who won't lie to me. Apparently that's a lot to ask, though.

THIRD PERSON:
One thing was for sure: Roxas was sick and tired of being told that he was chosen.

The chosen of the keyblade. Chosen child. Special Nobodies.

And a thought comes to him from nowhere in particular: Special is just another way of saying we're different. A pacifying thing that people said to make those who didn't know any better feel good while they were manipulated. Just like before, there was no explanation why he'd been chosen, what it was that made him different, whether that was good or bad... And what the hell was a Digimon anyway?

The anger that had possessed him before his arrival had drained away, but there was still a bitter aftertaste on his tongue. Was this really that different than before? His powers were gone now, but they seemed to have some other use for him. And if they had a use for him, why should they give him more explanations than were convenient for them? It only made sense to keep him in the dark, to distract him from what was really important--

Oh no. He had been distracted. Roxas's head jerked up, remembering why he had returned to The World That Never Was. He'd been fighting that imposter again, and he'd been going to free Kingdom Hearts so that he could learn more about Sora, and because...

Because she had asked him to, that girl with the blue eyes. It took him a long moment to remember her face clearly, and then he thought back. He couldn't let himself forget, her name was...

"...Xion!" Roxas lit up with relief as the name came back to him. That was right. And he repeated it again, and again. He had to keep it in mind until he could write it down.

And he was still saying that to himself when the door to his left opened.
